Theme Overview and Update
In 2025, our team identified three themes that, taken together, create a persuasive case to support arts and culture investments by decision-makers. These are:
- Economic Impact
- Cultural Vibrancy, and
- Social Cohesion.
The powerful connections between these themes are augmented through tangible, practice-based themes with targeted community involvement and investment, with Arts in Health providing a clear first example.
We have found that arts and culture are already solidly grounded in and contributing to Canadian economics and society, in ways that align with the stated priorities of decision-makers and investors at many levels. The ongoing task is to surface and strengthen the visibility and credibility of these contributions.
Under the theme Economic Impact, the recent 2025 Artworks Report commissioned by Business / Arts with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Business Data Lab is a clear example of meeting this visibility and credibility challenge. The Artworks Report removes any uncertainty that arts and culture are an economic driver in the Canadian economy, locally, provincially, and nationally. They are.
The resources we have collected under these themes to date demonstrate the ways that arts and culture permeate all aspects of Canadian civic life and society. These themes are important beyond the sector *and* they are strongly linked to the work of arts and culture.
The first three themes are essential to demonstrating the linked contribution of arts and culture to decision-makers. We have identified seven more practice-based themes to develop in our next phase. These cover a wide range of specific topics that together provide a cohesive picture of the distinct value of arts and culture in Canada, in this current moment.
